Against the particular item you want to return, you can click “Return and Refunds”, and a return form will open up. Fill the form providing as many details as possible even including photos that clearly show the problem.

After submitting the form, you’ll get a response from the Customer Service within 24 hours. The response will be an approval and a “Product Return Form” (PRF). You can then package the item appropriately including the product PRF in the package, and send it to the return shipping address in China.

While the process is itself easy, it could be easier with the provision of a return label. Amongst the many advantages of the return label is that the customers will not have to worry about return cost, because the labels are usually prepaid (the cost deducted from the refunded amount).

Return Window

Returned items will only be accepted by the retailer if it gets back to its warehouse within a specified time period. Thus, you’ll want a wide window so that there’ll be reduced risk of your return package getting back to the store late.

LightInTheBox offers two return windows. If you are returning an item to the store because it was delivered damaged, broken, or soiled, or because a wrong/ incorrect item was delivered, you’ll have a return window of 30 days from the delivery date. That is, the item must get to the store’s warehouse at most 30 days from the date it was delivered to you.

However, if you are returning an item because of buyer’s remorse (for example, it does not meet your expectation), you’ll have a return window of 14 days from the delivery date.

LightInTheBox stresses that any returned item that gets to them later than the 30 days return window will not be accepted. Thus, if you’re to return an item to the store, especially since the return package will be travelling to China, you’ll want to act fast.

This is where we love those stores that will still accept returned items that get to the late (but for such late returns, they’ll issue store credits and no refunds). It’s better having store credits that can still be used for purchases in the store, than having the returned item rejected, and having to pay the shipping to get back an unwanted item.

Eligible returns and Conditions

It’s very clear why customized items cannot be returned. They were made specifically for you, and it will be difficult to sell to any other person. For some unexplainable reasons, cell phones, tablets and co cannot be returned. I don’t know about you, but I’ll want to be able to return such items when buying them online. It should be said that bodysuit, lingerie and co are ineligible for returns for hygiene reasons; but in some stores, these items can be returned as long as the hygiene strips are intact.

Also, while there are usually restrictions on returning clearance items, in some stores, these items can be returned (albeit with a reduced return window). Bottom line is the policy (in terms of items eligible for returns) is not as friendly as we’ll like.

That said; for all items that are eligible for returns; to be accepted by the store when returned, the items must be in the same conditions they were when delivered. That is, they must not be used, worn, washed, altered, or damaged; and all tags must be intact.

Return Processing and Refund

The frustration of receiving an item that you have to return can easily boil over if you have to wait endlessly to get refunded. Thus, the ideal online store should offer fast returns processing and refunds.

In this regards, “LightInTheBox” says that after it receives your return package, your return will be processed in 3 – 5 business days and refunds will be issued immediately afterwards. However, as we’ll find in the complaint section, fast refunds seem to be the exception rather than the norm.

Adding 6 – 9 business days for processing the order to the 2 – 5 business days for shipping the order works out to the three weeks delivery time.

Well, there is no point of advertising fast shipping times that may make customers believing that overall delivery time is fast. Also, while the store’s response here is ingenious, it does not explain the many other late-delivery complaints that can be found.

There are just too many complaints of late delivery that they all cannot be chalked off to be resulting from “long order processing time that the customer fails to take note of”; the many late delivery complaints also cannot be chalked off as the one-off occurrence, or even coincidental occurrences. Rather, late delivery comes out as a problem plaguing the store.
